'I'm just doing my own thing now' - Gervonta Davis splits with Mayweather promotions ahead of potent

Publish date: 2024-08-21

Gervonta Davis has finally parted ways with Mayweather promotions following a turbulent few months.

Davis and Mayweather Jr had seemed at odds during the promotion for 'Tank's' most recent outing against Rolando Romero in May earlier this year.

Mayweather Jr had not been present for much of the build-up and he was not even in attendance on fight night, which combined with Davis' cryptic tweets, fuelled speculation the mentor-mentee relationship between the pair may be coming to an end.

Now it has been confirmed, as Davis revealed the split while promoting his upcoming fight with Hector Luis Garcia on January 7, although he is still working with Al Haymon.

"Much love to Mayweather Promotions - Leonard Ellerbe, Floyd Mayweather, all them guys," Davis said.

"I definitely appreciate them. I'm just doing my own thing now.

"Not saying in the future we can't work together or anything like that, but I'm just trying to put my own pants on."

Davis continued: “Floyd is out doing him. He's always been like that. You know what I mean?

"I have to focus on what I can focus on. He already did what he had to do. I ain't going to lie. If I did what he did in the sport, I'd be the same way. I don't fault him for staying to himself.

"But it's also a type of thing like, come back and help, too. But much love to Mayweather Promotions. It's no bad blood type s***.

"A lot of people think when I'm tweeting I'm mad. But I'm just talking s***. I'm tweeting because I'm in camp. I'm angry. If I wasn't in camp, I wouldn't be tweeting."

Davis is one of the brightest talents in world boxing and such is his popularity that other promoters are already circling in the hopes of working with 'Tank'.

There have recently been talks of a super-fight between Davis and Ryan Garcia and it seems promoter Eddie Hearn wants to be involved, as 'Tank' tweeted a $10 million offer that he had been sent by the Brit to make the clash happen.

As for Davis' response to the offer, he kept his cards close to his chest. "Old boy [Hearn] send me a crazy offer, but I don't see myself going to... I don't know, it depends. I don't want to burn my bridges with other people. If it's right, definitely."
